So you want some professional images of you and/or your band. What things should you consider when looking for a photographer?
1) Someone with experience. Shooting a concert isn't like shooting in a studio or at a wedding. Lighting changes fast. It's often dark or poorly lit. The subjects are often in constant motion. The photographer needs a level of experience not only in having the correct camera settings and equipment but also the intuition to be able to anticipate when the "Moments" are going to happen.
2) They have the right equipment for the job. There's a reason that many concert photographers carry two cameras and have multiple lenses available. Having the right equipment is a start but knowing how to use it is even more important.
3) Communication. It's a two way street so are the expectations clear both ways. What type and how many images, where, when and how long is the shoot, what is the layout of the venue, is there a photo pit, how and when will payment be made payment, delivery of the edited images are things that need to be discussed beforehand.
4) Editing style. Look through their portfolio and social media. Do they have a full gallery of live music images? Are the images they've posted a style that appeals to you? Do they have images of bands that play a similar genre to yours and do you like those images.
5) Collaboration. Look for someone that asks questions about you and your goals. Ultimately you want a photographer that views it as not just a job and has a genuine interest in creating images you can both be proud of. Ask other musicians how their experience was.
In closing, finding the right concert photographer is more than just pretty pictures. It's really about partnership and the ability to capture your sound and vibe with still images.
